Northland MUFON, a new chapter of the Mutual UFO Network, represents a collaborative effort between North Dakota MUFON and Northern Minnesota (Northland) MUFON. This new chapter emerges from a rich history rooted in the North Dakota MUFON, founded in 2008 as a 501(C)3 organization. Among its founding members were Kurt Pfleger, Lorna Hunter, Lawrence Gessner, and Dale Brown. The chapter’s leadership saw several transitions, with Kurt Pfleger as the first State Director, followed by Lorna Hunter and then Lawrence Gessner, a former Sheridan County Sheriff. Under their guidance, and later with Dale Brown and Kelly Benson-Gessner’s involvement, the chapter flourished, achieving significant recognition within MUFON International.

North Dakota MUFON quickly rose to prominence, holding its first public meeting in January 2009 at the Bismarck Public Library. These meetings became monthly gatherings featuring sighting reports, statistical updates, and engaging discussions on current ufology events. The chapter’s public engagement included hosting notable figures like Stanton T. Friedman, the esteemed Ufologist and MUFON International Director of Special Investigations, who spoke at a memorable public meeting. The chapter’s efforts extended beyond meetings, participating in annual parades and maintaining a website that once boasted over 3000 members.

Despite its successes, the North Dakota chapter faced challenges, culminating in its dissolution in September 2017 due to health concerns and staffing issues. However, Dale Brown’s recovery and continued passion for the field led him to join the newly formed Northland MUFON as a consultant.

In early 2023, Anna Scott, former Minnesota Assistant Chief Investigator, moved to the border area of Minnesota and North Dakota with a vision to revive the North Dakota chapter. Partnering with Jerry Nelson, the State Section Director of Northern Minnesota, they saw the potential for a cooperative chapter to serve both regions. After months of planning and coordination, Northland MUFON was officially incorporated in July 2023 and soon achieved Federal 501(C)3 Non-Profit Status.

Recognizing the rural nature of their service area, Northland MUFON adopted a split approach for meetings. They decided to hold simultaneous in-person meetings in Fargo, North Dakota, and Grand Rapids, Minnesota, connected via the internet. This innovative strategy allows participants from both states to interact and share experiences without the burden of extensive travel. The first meeting in December 2023 was a success, followed by another in January 2024 that incorporated a Zoom option for remote attendees. These meetings have featured prominent speakers like Larry Hancock from the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies and Kathleen Marden, niece of Betty and Barney Hill, who provided compelling presentations on the reality of UFOs and their historical evidence.

Looking ahead, Northland MUFON aims to expand its outreach with information booths at events like Bigfoot Days in Remer, MN, and other venues. Plans are underway to initiate meetings in Duluth, MN, and Bismarck, ND, once sufficient interest and participation are established. Community outreach and education remain top priorities, with the ultimate goal of increasing public awareness and involvement in MUFON’s mission.

Northland MUFON stands as a testament to the enduring fascination with UFO phenomena and the collaborative spirit of its members. By bridging the gap between North Dakota and Northern Minnesota, this new chapter fosters a community of enthusiasts dedicated to exploring the unknown and sharing knowledge. With a rich history and a promising future, Northland MUFON invites you to join its journey into the mysteries of the skies.
